RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over the festive period. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
