Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
