Space Traveler Shares Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also carried well-known figures.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.
She described the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her lab work and years of training to the personal milestone of her roots – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the followers whose kindness helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.
She concluded that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the flight, including increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the edge of outer space.
The diverse crew also included experts in multiple disciplines.
The company behind the mission is a private space firm founded by a Amazon founder.
