Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, one notices a clamor for the addition additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games globally and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
