The Former President's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true danger confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
