Uche Sparks Dominant Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden continental campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Missing star players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable win that virtually secures them a place in the Conference League playoffs.
Another victory in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be enough to secure straight entry to the last 16, especially following a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's fringe players to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning after joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne team that had finished their league season were outmatched against a largely second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg problems.
Control Asserted from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close soon after, fizzing a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the official waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The contest was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest several players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also blazed a glaring chance, indicating there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
