Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to challenge specific rulings from the official, mirroring the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
